November 18, 2005: George Michael Out Until January

Word has it that the injured George Michael, host of NBC Universal's syndicated Sports Machine, will try to return to the show at the beginning of next year.

Michaels was thrown from a horse at his home in Maryland Oct. 29 and was "pretty banged-up," according to a source.

It is the first time in the show's 21-year history that Michael, who is also a sportscaster for NBC's WRC-TV Washington, has missed a taping of his show (except for vacation), according to a show spokeswoman. No word on the extent of his injuries.

Subbing for the Michael in the interim has been veteran Sports Machine correspondent Andrea Brody.

November 18, 2005: Judge lets Courtney Love leave drug rehab center

LOS ANGELES - Rocker Courtney Love, who was confined to a lock-down substance abuse center earlier this year after violating her probation, can leave the facility for an outpatient program, a Los Angeles judge ruled on Friday.

"You're doing really well. I'm really pleased with the reports," Superior Court Judge Rand Rubin told the 41-year-old singer during a hearing. "I certainly hope you keep up the good progress. You're definitely going in the right direction."

Rubin had ordered Love, the widow of rock star Kurt Cobain, into the treatment center for 180 days after she admitted in August she had used drugs, a violation of her probation.

She is serving probation after pleading no contest to a misdemeanor assault charge stemming from an attack on musician Kristin King at the home of Love's ex-boyfriend. King sued Love in September over that incident.

In granting Love her release to an outpatient facility, Rubin told the former lead singer for the band Hole that she would have to submit to twice-weekly drug and alcohol tests and was permitted to leave home only under certain circumstances -- such as visiting doctors or her probation officer.

"Things are going great," Love's attorney, Howard Weitzman, told reporters after the hearing. "She's moving forward and taking the process very seriously. She hopes this is the beginning of the next chapter in her life."

November 17, 2005: Shatner Wants To Sell Kidney Stone

William Shatner is hoping to persuade medics who removed his kidney stone to hand it over so he can sell it on auction site eBay. The actor, who played Captain James T. Kirk in Star Trek, claims the stone will become "the ultimate piece of Star Trek memorabilia." Shatner plans to give the proceeds of the sale to charity, but he has to cut through eBay red tape first - the website's rules are strict about the sale of body parts. The 74-year-old actor was taken from the set of his hit TV show Boston Legal last month, suffering from what was initially reported to be chronic back pain. But Shatner has since revealed he had a kidney stone, which he successfully passed after experiencing excruciating pain.

November 4, 2005: Boxing legend losing battle with Parkinson's

According to a report in the London Evening Standard, Muhammad Ali is losing his two-decade long battle with Parkinson's disease and may only have "months to live."

A close family friend told the newspaper: "His condition has worsened. At this point, he may only have months to live."
But Ali's marketing agent, Harlan Werner, denied the report, telling BBC Sport, "Muhammad is fine and he has numerous appearances lined up.

"He had surgery on his back and was in therapy for that, but that had nothing to do with Parkinson's. He is fine."

While there seems to be some dispute over Ali's long-term health, there is little doubt that the Parkinson's disease is taking its toll.

Ali's manager, Howard Bingham, said: "(His daughter) Laila feels she is losing him."

Laila Ali essentially said as much last week in a story printed in the Los Angeles Times.

"I feel like the disease is progressing. Different things start happening as you get older. I have noticed a change in him, something that goes along with Parkinson's.

"It's painful for me because I would love to sit down and talk to my dad about the way he used to be when he was my age, when he was in his prime, because we are so much alike. I can't really do that. I can't share a lot of things with him."

The three-time heavyweight champion was diagnosed with Parkinson's in 1985, four years after he retired from boxing. The 63-year-old is currently undergoing therapy following treatment for neck and back problems.
