November 29, 2004: Kirk Douglas Hit With Lawsuit
Movie
veteran Kirk Douglas is being sued by a 64-year-old financial salesman, who
claims he was left with a severe hernia after the 'Spartacus' star crashed
into him in Beverly Hills.
John Robert is seeking compensation of more than $50,000 for lost wages and medical expenses for the crash two years ago.
The new suit comes just days before Douglas' 88th birthday.
Speaking exclusively to the court show Celebrity Justice (CJ), Robert says, "He (Douglas) may be a fine man, but he shouldn't be driving a car."
Robert claims he was "clipped" by the actor's car while he was standing by the rear door of his own vehicle. The plaintiff alleges his car was damaged and he suffered a hernia.
Robert adds, "Frankly, in some strange way, I feel glad I'm alive, and I'm not a cripple."
The actor's legal team insists the suit is frivolous and little more than an attempt to take advantage of the star.
Douglas' attorney told CJ the suit was frivolous and accused Robert of trying to take advantage of the elderly star. Robert was standing outside his car when the accident occurred, CJ said.
Douglas' attorney said Robert was at fault for opening the car door without checking oncoming traffic and he has asked Robert to cover damages to the Douglas' automobile.

November 24, 2004: Ozzy Osbourne Offers 100K For Stolen Jewellery
Ozzy
Osbourne spoke of his distress after thieves stole precious jewellery from
his country mansion.
The heavy metal star, who grappled with one of the intruders during yesterday’s break in, offered a £100,000 reward for the return of the stolen jewellery.
Ozzy and wife Sharon spoke of their distress following the burglary at their home in Chalfont St Peter, Buckinghamshire, at a press conference at a nearby hotel.
They gave a full list of the items taken, including Sharon’s wedding rings and a 24-carat sapphire, which Sharon bought as an investment for her daughters.
Sharon spoke of her anger at the burglary and said that while people might think that the family were rich enough to replace the items taken, their sentimental value made them irreplaceable.
She added that she and Ozzy had “worked our arses off” to pay for the goods taken, which were valued at around £2.5m

November 22, 2004: Thieves Steal Jewels from Ozzy Osbourne's Mansion
LONDON
- Burglars broke into the English country home of rocker and reality TV star
Ozzy Osbourne on Monday and stole a large amount of jewelry, police said.
They used a ladder to climb through a first floor window at the Osbourne's
mansion at Chalfont St Peter in Buckinghamshire, just north of London, police
said.
"The disturbance woke the residents and a man grabbed one of the burglars," a police spokeswoman said, without saying if the man in question was Ozzy. "The offender eventually managed to struggle free and then jumped out of the window and made off."
Ozzy and his wife Sharon, two of Britain's best loved reality TV stars, are living at the mansion. Their children were not in the house at the time.
Osbourne, 55, first shot to fame in the 1970s as frontman of ground-breaking heavy metal band Black Sabbath.
He has since mellowed from wild man of heavy rock to comical much-loved star of MTV's popular reality show "The Osbournes," which offers a peek into his life at home with his family.
Frequently in the news in Britain, he injured himself badly in a quad bike crash a year ago. He fractured eight ribs and a vertebra in the accident and spent several days on a ventilator.

November 10, 2004: Lewis to Receive IPA’s 2005 TESLA Award
Beverly
Hills, CA -- The International Press Academy will bestow this honor during
the 9thAnnual Satellite Awards Presentation January 23, 2005, in Beverly Hills,
California.
The International Press Academy (IPA), recognized as one the largest entertainment media associations of accredited domestic and foreign journalists in the world, today announced that Jerry Lewis, famed actor, writer/director and humanitarian, has been named as the recipient of the 2005 Tesla Award In Recognition of Visionary Achievements as a pioneering innovator in the field of visual technology for the cinema arts. Mr. Lewis will accept the Tesla Award at the Satellite Award gala, set to take place January 23, 2005, at The Beverly Hills Hotel, Beverly Hills, California.
Born Joseph Levitch, March 16, 1926 in Newark, NJ, Jerry Lewis was a stand-up comic whose career was transformed when he paired with straight man, Dean Martin, in 1946. The pair's hit nightclub routine was first transferred to film in 1949 with Lewis and Martin going on to star in a total of 16 films. After going solo in 1956 Lewis went on to write, star in, direct and even score his own vehicles, including “Cinderfella “The Bellboy,” “The Nutty Professor,” and a dozen other classic comedy musicals for which he became known around the world. It was during this period that the star conceived the concept of "Video Assist", an innovation that became standard in the industry and is still used principally as he conceived it to this day.
While he is known the world over as a brilliant artist and stalwart humanist, raising billions of dollars for muscular dystrophy research through his annual telethons, few are aware of the depth and breathe of the entertainer Jerry Lewis’ technical achievements and contributions to the science of filmmaking. The International Press Academy honors these achievements with its Tesla Award for visionary innovations in the cinema arts, marking Jerry Lewis along with past winners George Lucas and James Cameron as one of the outstanding achievers in the technical advance in the world of filmmaking.

November 9, 2004: Real life JR keeps reminder of drinking demons
Larry
Hagman has a constant reminder of his boozy past - the picture of the man
whose liver kept the former Dallas star alive.
Hagman, who played oil tycoon JR Ewing in the hit 1970s and 1980s soap, needed a liver transplant after years of heavy drinking almost cost him his life.
He explains: "I drank my liver out - over 40 years of drinking - and I feel great now. I have somebody else's liver and I give thanks to him everyday. I have his picture next to my shaving mirror."

November 9, 2004: Johnny Carson to give gift to UNL
The
University of Nebraska-Lincoln will hold a press conference at 10:30 a.m.
Wednesday to announce a major gift from entertainer Johnny Carson for a Temple
Building project.
UNL chancellor Harvey Perlman, University of Nebraska Foundation president Terry Fairfield and Giacomo Oliva, dean of the Hixson-Lied College of Fine and Performing Arts, will be on hand for the announcement.
Kathe Andersen, the Hixson-Lied publications coordinator, said Carson will not be at the press conference.
Foundation communications director Christine Aguirre declined to reveal project details or the size of the gift.
A news release said the gift will "have a lasting positive impact on students and faculty."
Perlman and Oliva didn't return telephone calls, and Fairfield was out of town Tuesday.
"We want to hold some interesting things for tomorrow," Aguirre said. "We're trying to keep this an exciting announcement."
The Temple Building at 12th and R streets is home to UNL's department of theater arts. It also houses Howell Theatre and the third-floor, black-box Studio Theatre.
The Nebraska-raised Carson is the former host of "The Tonight Show." He has a black box theater named for him at the Lied Center for Performing Arts.
Carson, 79, has remained out of the spotlight since leaving "The Tonight Show" in May 1992.

November 4, 2004: Queen Elizabeth II wraps up German visit
DUESSELDORF,
Germany -- Britain's Queen Elizabeth II said Thursday her state visit to Germany
gave her "renewed confidence" in the friendship between the former
enemies, emphasizing strong economic ties as she ended her three-day tour.
In a speech to the state parliament of North Rhine-Westphalia, an industrial region in western Germany, the queen underscored the post-World War II reconciliation between the two countries.
"Certainly we should not lose sight of the past, nor of the scale of human suffering on both sides during the Second World War," she said. "Nobody of my generation needs reminding of that."
"But we have traveled a very long way in the last 60 years and so much of what has been achieved has been done together," the queen added. "I depart with renewed confidence in the deep friendship between our two countries so crucial to us both in the 21st century ahead."
This week's state visit is the queen's fourth to Germany. She also visited Duesseldorf on her first trip to the country in 1965, and on Thursday recalled "the appreciation for how Britain had helped in the years immediately following the war."
Britain was the occupying power in the region immediately after the war. Now, the queen said, about 300 British firms have chosen North Rhine-Westphalia as the base for their German operations.
On Tuesday, she laid a wreath at Germany's national memorial to war victims in Berlin and acknowledged wartime suffering on both sides.
On Wednesday, she hosted a concert at the Berlin Philharmonic, with proceeds going toward restoring the Frauenkirche, or Church of Our Lady, in Dresden - devastated by Allied bombing in 1945.
In North Rhine-Westphalia, the queen also visited an exhibition on British investment in the region and had lunch with state governor Peer Steinbrueck at a Duesseldorf art museum.
She closed her visit with a trip to a Duesseldorf hospital that works closely with several British universities.

November 4, 2004: B.B. King still the king of the road
Blues
legend B.B. King continues to call the road his home in the coming months,
with an itinerary that will take him to about 40 U.S. cities by the end of
January.
Though he's less than a year away from his 80th birthday, King continues to play well over 100 concerts per year. During his 60-plus-year recording career, King--who was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1987--has released more than 50 albums.
King's latest album of new material, "Reflections," hit stores last year. The set includes King's renditions of three songs previously recorded by Louis Armstrong, as well as songs that have been recorded by Nat King Cole, Sam Cooke, Frank Sinatra, Willie Nelson and others.
King has a major role in the new film "Lightning in a Bottle," which captures the Feb. 7, 2003 "Salute to the Blues" benefit concert at New York City's Radio City Music Hall. Besides King, the bill for the concert included Buddy Guy, John Fogerty, Bonnie Raitt, Mos Def and India.Arie, among many others.
The film--executive produced by Martin Scorsese, Paul G. Allen and Jody Patton, and directed by Antoine Fuqua--tells a history of the blues by juxtaposing performances from the concert with backstage interviews, rehearsals and archival clips.

November 2, 2004: Muhammad Ali performs magic tricks at centre named in his honour
LOUISVILLE,
Ky. - Muhammad Ali posed for pictures, gave out hugs and performed magic tricks
for about 150 people who turned out for a "topping out" ceremony
at the downtown centre named for him.
The event was to mark reaching the centre's highest point. As part of Monday's ceremony, a large crane was to hoist the highest beam into place on the steel frame of the six-story Muhammad Ali Center.
But rain kept that from happening, and the beam was lifted only a few feet off the ground.
The $34.5 million US, 8,600 square-metre centre is scheduled to open Nov. 19, 2005.
It will include exhibits, featuring six themed pavilions. Each will focus on a different trait of the former heavyweight boxing champion.
Lonnie Ali, Ali's wife, said the Alis are committed to the centre "becoming a global gathering place, where individuals not only have a platform for ironing out their differences, but a place" to motivate visitors to strive.
The Ali Institute, based at the University of Louisville, plans to hold seminars and other events at the centre to promote peacemaking and conflict resolution.
Officials also announced new contributions to the project of $2 million, which match an anonymous donor's grant for a total of $4 million.
