May 10, 2006: Stones deny Keith Richards suffered brain damage

LOS ANGELES - Rolling Stones guitarist Keith Richards, recovering from a head injury caused by a fall last month in Fiji, has not suffered brain damage, a spokeswoman for the band said on Tuesday.

The Stones' New York-based publicist, Fran Curtis, issued a statement denying a report in the New Zealand Herald that Richards, 62, had undergone two surgeries and that doctors were concerned about brain damage.

"Keith Richards did not undergo a second operation. The first and only operation was done on Monday, May 8, and was 100 percent successful," the band's statement said. "There was no brain damage. He continues to improve as expected."

The European leg of the band's "A Bigger Bang" world tour would begin in June, the statement said.

The hard-living Richards, a founding member and mainstay of the band with lead singer Mick Jagger since the Stones formed in the early 1960s, has been in Auckland, New Zealand, under medical observation and treatment since taking a fall while on vacation in the island resort of Fiji in late April.

Last week, a spokeswoman for the band said Richards had suffered only a mild concussion and would not need surgery.

But the band issued a statement on Monday acknowledging that after complaining of headaches, he had undergone "a small operation to remove the pressure."

The New Zealand Herald, citing an unnamed source, reported that Richards had undergone surgery 11 days earlier, on April 28, to stop bleeding in his skull, and that medical staff feared for his life at that time.

According to the Herald, he was discharged a few days later but was readmitted to the hospital after passing out and complaining of major headaches.

The second operation, which the newspaper described as major surgery, involved drilling holes in Richards' skull, and removing a portion of the skull, to remove blood clots.

Ascot Hospital in Auckland declined comment on the report.

Richards' two daughters -- 21-year-old Theodora and 19-year-old Alexandra -- also were reported to have arrived at the hospital to join their mother at Richards' bedside.

The Stones' publicists have given few details of Richards' fall, which happened after the band's tour through Japan, China, Australia and New Zealand. Newspaper accounts have variously reported that he fell from a tree or from a watercraft while on vacation.

May 10, 2006: Blaine 'lucky to survive bubble stunt'

Stuntman David Blaine was unconscious and having convulsions when he was rescued from his 2.4m aquarium during a breath holding stunt, his trainer says.

"I wasn't focused on records, I was thinking of a rescue," said trainer Kirk Krack, a free diving expert.

Blaine was convulsing and "unconscious when we brought him to the surface".

"If we hadn't intervened, he would still be at the bottom of the sphere doing a breath-hold," Krack said today.

The 33-year-old illusionist had been submerged in the aquarium with an oxygen mask for a week. Rescue divers jumped into the 7,570.60-litre saltwater tank and hauled him up.

He was rescued as he struggled to break a breath-holding record of 8 minutes, 58 seconds. Blaine, who had spent 177 hours underwater, went without air for seven minutes, eight seconds as a finale to his endurance stunt at Lincoln Centre, which was televised live on ABC.

Blaine checked himself out of Roosevelt Hospital today.

Friends took him out of the hospital in a wheelchair and then helped him walk to a waiting car.

At home, he took a hot shower, played cards and was able to eat.

But he was crying last night, said Dr Murat Gunel, the head of Blaine's medical team.

"He still feels today that he let people down."

Blaine's liver and kidney functions had suffered while he was submerged but are now improving. His skin, which was peeling "looks much better today," Gunel said.

His team concluded that strenuous training and losing 22.5kg so his body would require less oxygen left Blaine too tired before he entered the sphere.

They said Blaine wants to try the breath holding stunt again.

Next time, he plans to be in better shape and do it without being in a tank for a week beforehand.

"He is going over everything he did and analysing what happened," said Gunel, associate professor of neurosurgery at Yale University School of Medicine. "He is remarkably strong."

"I think he was a great success," said Krack, adding there are only a handful of people who can hold their breath for more than four minutes with training.

Blaine started training in December, with some help from Navy SEALS. The water temperature was regulated to help keep his core temperature near 98.6 degrees Fahrenheit (37 degrees Celsius), and he ate and relieved himself through tubes.

His previous feats included balancing on a 56cm circular platform atop a 30m pole for 35 hours, being buried alive in a transparent coffin for a week and surviving inside a massive block of ice for 61 hours, all of which were performed in New York.

In 2003, he fasted for 44 days in a suspended acrylic box over the Thames River in London.

May 2, 2006: Keith Richards Leaves New Zealand Hospital
Keith Richards Leaves New Zealand Hospital After Recovering From Fall

WELLINGTON, New Zealand — Keith Richards has been released from a New Zealand hospital where the Rolling Stones guitarist was admitted with a head injury after he reportedly fell out of a palm tree.

Richards, 62, suffered a mild concussion while on vacation in Fiji Thursday. Several Australian and New Zealand media outlets reported the fall from the tree.

New Zealand's Sunday Star-Times also reported that Richards got on a Jet Ski after the fall and had another accident.

Richards was treated in a Fiji hospital before being airlifted to Auckland's Ascot Hospital for observation. It was not immediately clear exactly when he was released or where he went afterward.

"I can categorically confirm Mr. Richards … is no longer a patient in this hospital," hospital duty manager Geoff Sparks told The Associated Press on Tuesday. "He has been discharged.

Band spokeswoman Fran Curtis has said only that Richards was injured earlier this week and flown to New Zealand with his wife, Patti, for observation. Her statement Saturday did not comment on Richards' condition or how he was injured.

Richards and his wife were staying at the exclusive Wakaya Club resort on a small Fijian island when he was injured.
