March 31, 2006: Courtney Love sells off quarter of Nirvana publishing rights

NEW YORK - Remember all those rumors going around that Courtney Love was going to sell the rights to the Nirvana songs?

She really did. Rolling Stone reports Love sold 25 percent of the publishing catalog to Larry Mestel of Primary Wave Music Publishing. Mestel is also the former chief operating officer of Virgin Records.

Neither Love nor Mestel will name the dollar figure, but a source close to the deal says Mestel has likely paid more than $50 million for the rights.

Love says she took on Mestel as a strategic partner because managing Kurt Cobain's estate is overwhelming. Mestel says Cobain was an incredible songwriter, and Love is a talented person herself, so he felt Love's creativity and the things he can add would make the songs more valuable.

So what does that mean, "Smells Like Teen Spirit" in a deodorant commercial? Hardly. Both Love and Mestel say they're going to remain tasteful and stay true to Cobain.

March 24, 2006: Dale Jarrett says two more years will about do it for him and NASCAR competition

Dale Jarrett said Friday that he's pretty much decided he wants to drive through the end of the 2008 season.

"Hopefully, it's going to be where I am," Jarrett said of his No. 88 Ford team owned by Robert Yates Racing. "That hasn't totally been decided yet, but we're working on that. There have been other conversations - so I have to explore all of the options. (But) I'd say that things look pretty good that I will be where I am through that time."

Jarrett said he hopes to know for sure whether or not that will be the case by May's races at Lowe's Motor Speedway.

He said one reason he's looking at the end of 2008 is that's when his son, Zach, will be preparing to go to high school.

"The other part of it is you're not wanting to be here longer than what I should be," said Jarrett, who would be 52 at the end of the 2008 season. "I think trying to extend it any longer than that would be taking a chance as far as my competitive spirit and my body holding up."

March 24, 2006: Down in the Dumps: Marlin deserves a better ride

Time's running out on Sterling Marlin, who by his estimation has this season and next season left on the NASCAR Nextel Cup circuit to get another victory.

There was a time when Marlin showed up at most all tracks with visions of racing for the checkered flag.

Now, in his first year with MB2 Motorsports, Marlin just hopes for a race where nothing goes wrong and he can finish on the lead lap.

Marlin believes it could happen Sunday at Bristol Motor Speedway, despite the high volume of crashes that typically occur on the high-banked .533-mile oval.

Marlin can greatly aid his chances for a clean finish with a good run in today's Sharpie 500 qualifying at 3:30 p.m. (TV: Speed).

Marlin's typically run strong at Bristol, scoring three top-fives and 18 top-10 finishes in 42 starts.

But to this point of the season, Marlin's Waste Management Chevrolet has run like, well ... garbage.

It has left the 48-year-old stock car folk hero sitting 39th in the points entering Sunday's Sharpie 500 -- last among the drivers who have started all four races.

Not so good for one of the sport's few remaining good 'ol boys.

Certainly, it's a far cry from where Marlin was just four years ago, when he led the points chase for 25 races before a crash at Kansas forced him to miss the final seven races of the season with a neck injury. Marlin recorded the final two of his 10 career wins in 2002 and hasn't visited Victory Lane at a Cup race since.

Three winless seasons later, this year has been another backbreaker to date.

In the season-opening race at Daytona, where Marlin staked his claim to fame in 1994 and 1995 with back-to-back Daytona 500 victories, Sterling teased his fans for a bit. Marlin used his drafting expertise to pilot his backup car into the top 10 of the running order before getting caught up in "one of them racin' deals" and ending up 34th.

The laps up front are the highlight of Marlin's otherwise forgettable season.

At California, his team missed the setup and Marlin was forced to ride around to a 32nd-place finish. The luck didn't change at Las Vegas, where a blown engine led to a 36th-place finish. Last week at Atlanta, a flat tire put Marlin two laps down en route to 34th place.

It's all added up to 39th place in the standings, and a lot of frustration.

"It's hard knowing you can do it, but you can't get the car to do right for you,'' Marlin said. "It's aggravating, but NASCAR has let it get out of hand, cutting the spoiler off, and some guys figure out how to get the downforce.''

And some, like those on Marlin's race team, haven't.

Marlin likes his sponsors, teammate (Joe Nemechek), crew and owner just fine. But this hasn't been the kind of ride Marlin deserves at this point of his career.

Marlin got cut loose from his prior deal with owner Chip Ganassi because Ganassi claimed Marlin wasn't the most-marketable fellow.

Whatever the logic, it doesn't wash in Tennessee, where Marlin is a favored son.

John Chavis, the defensive coordinator with the University of Tennessee football team, is one of Marlin's biggest fans.

"From my perspective, there's no doubt he's Tennessee's driver,'' Chavis said. "Sterling has a good fan base all over the country, but he's obviously very dear to the people in this state. It's exciting he's coming to a track he's always run good at.''

Bristol is a track that takes the race out of the hands of the teams' engineers and aerodynamic packages and places it squarely into the hands of drivers.

"It's real hard to pass at Bristol, but I think it's one of those tracks that every time you go there, you have a chance to win,'' Marlin said. "There's never a dull moment out there. Bristol is as much about experience and quick thinking as it is about a good racecar.

"I'd like nothing more than to get a victory at one of my favorite places, a short track in Tennessee.''
Marlin said retirement isn't at the forefront of his mind, but it's a fast-approaching reality.

"I'll probably run this year and next year,'' Marlin said. "I've put 50 as a benchmark to quit. It would mean a whole lot to win one more.''

There's no better place -- and perhaps no more likely place -- for Marlin to do that than Bristol.

March 18, 2006: France's love affair with Jerry Lewis continues

PARIS - France formalized its fascination with Jerry Lewis with a uniquely Gallic gift for his 80th birthday: a medal and induction into the Legion of Honor.

Lewis received the honorary title of "Legion Commander" in a raucous ceremony in Paris on Thursday - hamming it up for the cameras, winking, sticking out his tongue and making his trademark funny faces.

True to form, the comedian turned what is generally a sober event - set in a gilded hall of the Ministry of Culture - into a virtual slapstick routine.

Lewis, who bucked formality by wearing slippers to the ceremony, clowned around with Culture Minister Renaud Donnedieu de Vabres - yawning, checking his watch and even pretending to fall asleep during Donnedieu’s 20-minute-long speech in French.

The crowd roared at Lewis’ antics, their laughter often drowning out Donnedieu’s lofty words.

At one point, Lewis tried to snatch the prepared speech from the podium, but an affable Donnedieu persevered. "The longer my remarks last the better," he told the audience, "so you can keep on enjoying Jerry Lewis’ comic talents."

When he finally took the microphone, Lewis apologized for not speaking French, but said that "even if the French people cannot hear my language, they have always heard my heart."

He applauded the country’s sense of humor, saying he believed it "took France through all those difficult years, and will take it through difficult times now because the French are not afraid to laugh."

Ministry officials wheeled in a massive cake, and the audience sang "Happy Birthday," delivered with a heavy French accent.

Lewis said he was flattered by his induction into the Legion of Honor, and said he had been "gloriously elevated" by the award. He was one of 37 foreigners to have received the title over the past three years.

"The French people are the best in the world," Lewis said.

March 17, 2006: Curt Weldon: Bin Laden Is Dead

Rep. Curt Weldon, who broke the Able Danger story last year revealing that military intelligence had identified lead hijacker Mohamed Atta as a terrorist threat before the 9/11 attacks, now says that Osama bin Laden has died.

Weldon made the stunning claim during an interview Wednesday with the Philadelphia Inquirer, which reported: "Weldon is making explosive new allegations. He says a high-level source has told him that terrorist leader Osama bin Laden has died in Iran, where he has been in hiding."

Weldon cited as his source an Iranian exile code-named Ali, telling the paper: "Ali's told me that Osama bin Laden is dead. He died in Iran."

Weldon said he last spoke to Ali three weeks ago. The Iranian exile was a prominent source for his 2005 book, "Countdown to Terror." The book also contained the first mention of the Able Danger data mining operation.

The Pennsylvania Republican has long alleged that bin Laden has been using Iran for sanctuary.

In June last year, Weldon said in a TV interview: "I'm confident that I know for sure that [bin Laden] has been in and out of Iran ... Two years ago, he was in the southern town of Ladis, 10 kilometers inside the Pakistan border. I also know that earlier this year, he had a meeting with al-Zarqawi in Tehran ...

"If you look at the recent comments coming out of both the CIA and some of our military generals in theater, they're now acknowledging the same thing that I've been saying - that in fact, he's been in and out of Iran.

"[But] no one can prove it exactly until we capture him."

March 12, 2006: Queen Elizabeth arrives in Australia

Queen Elizabeth II was greeted by a crowd shouting "God save the Queen" as she arrived in Australia with Prince Philip for a five-day tour.

Australian Prime Minister John Howard and Governor-General Michael Jeffery met the Queen as she flew into Canberra, the BBC reported.

Republican campaigners said the visit was an opportunity to reopen the debate about replacing the Queen with a home-grown president.

"While the Queen is held in great affection by the Australian people, many Australians recognize that it is no longer sensible for us to have a citizen of another country, who visits Australia only occasionally, as our head of state," Allison Henry, national director of the Australian Republican Movement, told the BBC.

The Queen, who last visited Australia in 2002, will read a message of welcome to open the Commonwealth Games in Melbourne.
