January 26, 2006: Ford Out of Hospital, 'Doing Well'
Former
President Ford returned home from the hospital Wednesday morning after a 12-day
stay during which he was treated for pneumonia, his spokeswoman said.
"He is doing well," Penny Circle, Ford's chief of staff, said in
a brief statement Wednesday.
Ford, 92, originally had been scheduled to leave Eisenhower Medical Center
in Rancho Mirage on Jan. 19, but doctors kept him for additional treatment.
"Obviously, we're delighted that he's doing well," said Ford's son, Mike, director of student development at Wake Forest University in Winston-Salem, N.C.
Circle has described Ford during the last week as out of bed, reading the newspaper and eating well.
The 38th president was hospitalized briefly last month for a bad cold when undergoing routine medical tests. Ford suffered two small strokes in 2000 and a dizzy spell on a golf course in 2003.
The former chief executive served in the White House from 1974 to 1977, taking the oath of office after President Nixon resigned during the Watergate scandal. Nixon had appointed Ford vice president in 1973 when Spiro T. Agnew resigned.
Ford has lived in Rancho Mirage with his wife, Betty, for nearly three decades.

January 24, 2006: Tony Stewart a 'Regular' at White House
WASHINGTON
-- NASCAR Cup champion Tony Stewart has had such a successful racing career
that he's becoming a regular at the White House.
Stewart said President Bush recalled his two previous visits to the Oval Office -- one for his first Cup championship and another with other top drivers -- when he came in for a third Tuesday.
"It's a real big honor to be able to come here and have the president remember you," Stewart told reporters as he left the West Wing. "He said, `I'd like to see you back here next year.' So I'm definitely on his side on that. I would love to come back here next year as a champion again."
Stewart's entire team was included in the meeting. Stewart gave Bush a team driving suit, and Bush checked out the car parked outside.
Joe Gibbs, owner of the team and coach of the Washington Redskins, said Bush was joking with all the guys. It got so chummy that one team member gave the president a sporty pat on the rear and told him he is doing a good job, Gibbs said.
"I was talking to Tony, and I said, `Who would believe that eight years ago when I was talking to you on this ramp at this little airport and we were trying to get together racing, we'd wind up at the White House?'" Gibbs said. "So, it's a big thrill for all of us."

January 19, 2006: B.B. King Plans One More World Tour
LOS
ANGELES -- While other 80-year-olds might dust off their rockers, blues dynamo
B.B. King will be rocking and rolling when he launches what he says will be
his final world tour later this year.
King will begin an international "Farewell Tour" in March, part of a domestic tour that starts Feb. 16 in Chicago, King's publicist, Jerry Digney, said in a news release Wednesday.
King said he will continue to make U.S. concert appearances after the tour.
"I hardly remember I'm 80 unless I have to run up a hill or stairs," the singer and guitarist said . "As long as people buy my records and come to my concerts, I don't see anything else I'd like to do."
King has toured every year for 60 years, Digney said Thursday.
The musician celebrated his 80th birthday in September and released an album, "B.B. King & Friends _ 80," featuring Eric Clapton, Elton John, Sheryl Crow and other musicians.
A $10 million B.B. King museum is slated to open later this year in the Grammy winner's native Mississippi.
"I think the clock is ticking, yes," King said. "In fact, I know it is. Frank Sinatra sang about the September of (his) years. I think I'm in the November of my years."

January 18, 2006: Cronkite is 'keeping company' with Carly Simon's big sister
PASADENA,
Calif. - Uncle Walter is in love, and that's the way it is.
Legendary CBS newsman Walter Cronkite, 89, who lost his wife of 65 years to cancer in March, acknowledges that he's "keeping company" with Carly Simon's big sister, "but I'm not making any announcements, as yet."
Opera singer Joanna Simon, 65, and Cronkite live in the same apartment building in Manhattan and have attended events together.
"We are keeping company, as the old phrase used to be," Cronkite said in an interview Sunday at the TV Critics Association's semiannual meeting. "I'm not making any moves immediately. I don't think it's proper. My wife has only been gone less than a year. I'll wait until that year has passed, at least."
Cronkite, to be profiled by PBS' "American Masters" series in July, stepped down as anchor in 1981.

January 18, 2006: 'Star Trek' star Shatner sells kidney stone
LOS
ANGELES - Going maybe where no other actor has gone before, "Star Trek"
star William Shatner has sold a piece of his body for charity.
Shatner, famed for playing Captain James T. Kirk, commander of the starship U.S.S. Enterprise in the original "Star Trek" TV series, sold his kidney stone to online casino GoldenPalace.Com for $25,000. The money will be donated by Shatner to Habitat for Humanity to build houses for the poor.
But Shatner said it wasn't easy parting with a kidney stone, even if it had already left his body. He also said he would never sell unless he had visitation rights.
"When I was contacted about selling my kidney stone to GoldenPalace.Com for an original price of $15,000 I turned it down, knowing that my tunics from Star Trek have commanded more than $100,000," Shatner said, adding that he countered by offering to sell the ring-sized stone for $25,000.
By privately selling his kidney stone, Shatner gave up an offer to sell it at auction on television. Comedian Jimmy Kimmel interviewed Shatner about his painful stone on November 14 and immediately called it "the ultimate Star Trek collectible" and offered to sell it on his show.
GoldenPalace.Com plans to send the stone on tour with a collection of other unusual items.
A spokesman for Shatner said he didn't knew if the Emmy-winning actor would consider selling any other body parts.
"We are very pleased to own this piece of TV history and to be able to help a worthy charity like Habitat For Humanity," said GoldenPalace.Com Chief Executive Officer Richard Rowe.

January 18, 2006: Tony Stewart gets a medical green flag
It's
all systems go for Stewart after his follow-up doctor's visit Monday following
a crash at the Chili Bowl in Tulsa, Okla., on Friday night.
Stewart had X rays on his right arm and a CT scan after flipping his car in the midget race, his second crash in three nights.
The reigning Nextel Cup champion's arm was put in a cast until he could see his physician Monday, but team spokesman Mike Arning said Tuesday that the cast came off and will stay off.
"There are no broken bones or ligament damage," Arning said. "Nothing is torn, ripped or anything like that. He just has a bruise on his elbow and some soreness."
Arning said everything Stewart is scheduled to do, from a charity snowmobile ride for crew chief Greg Zipadelli on up to racing in the Rolex 24 at Daytona and testing his Cup car at Las Vegas Jan. 30-Feb. 1 is still planned.

January 16, 2006: Ex-President Ford hospitalized in Calif
LOS
ANGELES - Former U.S. President Gerald Ford, 92, was admitted to a California
hospital on Monday for treatment of pneumonia, his spokeswoman said.
"President Ford was admitted to Eisenhower Medical Center in Rancho Mirage with pneumonia. He is doing well and resting comfortably," spokeswoman Penny Circle said in a prepared statement.
She said she would release no further details on Monday and hospital officials declined to comment.
Ford, president in the mid-1970s, was taken to the hospital in December for what his office said were routine tests. He suffered a mild stroke in August 2000 and was hospitalized briefly in 2003 after suffering dizzy spells while playing golf in the desert heat near Palm Springs.
Doctors and friends said at the time that Ford, an avid golfer and former college football player, was in excellent health generally.
Ford took office in August 9, 1974, when Richard Nixon resigned amid the Watergate scandal. Nixon had named Ford as vice president to replace Spiro Agnew, who also had stepped down.
In 1976, Ford lost the presidential election to Democrat Jimmy Carter. Ford later served on several corporate boards and toured the lecture circuit before retiring to the California desert community of Rancho Mirage, near Palm Springs, about 90 miles east of Los Angeles.

January 16, 2006: Love Regains Custody Of Francis
Los
Angeles, CA – Troubled rock diva Courtney Love has reportedly won back
full custody of her daughter Francis Bean Cobain, after overcoming a recurring
drug problem.
Love lost custody of her daughter last year after violating probation for using drugs, but has now reportedly won her back due to the progress and commitment to her recovery.
In a Los Angeles court hearing in November, Judge Rand Rubin told Love, "You're doing really well. I'm really pleased with the reports. I certainly hope you keep up the good progress. You're definitely going in the right direction."

With no bids on singer’s home, mortgage company takes possession of
property
OLYMPIA
— Courtney Love’s historic bungalow south of Littlerock now belongs
to a mortgage company after no one bid on the property Friday during a foreclosure
auction.
Los Angeles-based WMC Mortgage filed a lawsuit last year in Thurston County Superior Court seeking foreclosure after Love stopped paying the bills. The final balance on the home totaled $386,000, which includes court costs, sheriff’s fees and interest, said Thurston County sheriff’s Sgt. Dan McLendon of the agency’s civil division.
McLendon said he expected a bigger turnout after fielding about 100 calls during the week from people who expressed interest in the property. It was an unusually high number of calls, likely due to the owner’s celebrity status, he said.
The auctions are administered by the sheriff’s office every Friday at the courthouse.
“We had a ton of calls. It really kind of shocked me. We anticipated a lot of folks coming out,” he said.
Love, widow of the late Nirvana frontman Kurt Cobain, purchased the property in 1997 for Cobain’s family. Love was named in the foreclosure suit as a trustee of the Courtney Love family trust. She stopped paying the mortgage in December 2003, court documents say.
Cobain’s sister, Kim, was listed as the resident. She moved out in advance of the auction, McLendon said.
The home was built in 1903 by Thomas Bordeaux, who in the early 1900s owned a successful lumber company that cut timber from the Black Hills. The home sits on 13 acres along the edge of Capitol Forest on Bordeaux Road.
It is one of the last remaining structures from the town of Bordeaux, which was demolished when the logging operation closed in 1941, according to county records. The gabled, bungalow-style home is listed on the local historical inventory.
Love also is registered as the owner of a second property east of Olympia, according to the Thurston County Assessor’s Office Web site.
The foreclosure accompanied legal and financial troubles that have plagued Love the past few years. Love, 41, has been in and out of court, for reasons that include custody of her daughter with Cobain, Frances Bean. Love temporarily lost custody in October 2003 when she was arrested for breaking a window at her ex-boyfriend’s home and for overdosing on painkillers.
The actress and former lead singer of Hole spoke in well-publicized interviews of having financial problems and claimed she and her daughter had been swindled out of about $40 million by a “fiduciary institution.”
With the property, the company takes on $7,800 in back property tax, including payments owed from 2004, according to the county Auditor’s Web site.
A spokesperson for the mortgage company could not be reached for comment.
“I don’t know what their intentions are going to be, but my guess is they would probably turn it over to a local Realtor to sell it so they can recoup their funds,” McLendon said.
Olympia was home to Cobain during Nirvana’s early years, and it’s where he wrote many of the band’s songs. Cobain, who committed suicide in 1994, grew up in Aberdeen and moved to Olympia at age 20.

January 4, 2006: Malibu judge says Nick Nolte completes probation in DUI case
MALIBU
– Actor Nick Nolte has successfully completed probation ordered after
his 2002 no contest plea to a misdemeanor count of driving under the influence
of drugs, a judge ruled Wednesday.
Nolte was present at the hearing before Judge Lawrence Mira.
"I'm about to do 'Pride and Glory,' a film in New York with Colin Farrell, and he'll just be coming out of rehab so he'll have a lot of support (from me)," Nolte, 64, told the syndicated television entertainment show "The Insider" outside court.
Farrell was being treated for exhaustion and dependency on prescription medication prescribed to the Irish actor after a back injury, his publicist Danica Smith said last month.
Nolte was taken into custody Sept. 11, 2002, after being seen driving his luxury car erratically along Pacific Coast Highway then failing a field sobriety test. He was accused of being under the influence of the so-called date rape drug gamma-hydroxybutyrate, or GHB.
His lawyer said later that Nolte apparently consumed GHB inadvertently in the course of taking a weightlifting supplement. The actor voluntarily entered a substance abuse rehabilitation center for several weeks.
In December 2002, Nolte pleaded no contest to driving under the influence of drugs and was placed on three years probation, with the conditions that he undergo counseling and drug testing.
Nolte, who has attended Alcoholics Anonymous meetings since 1989, has appeared in more than 40 movies, including "Cape Fear," "The Prince of Tides" and "48 Hours."
His upcoming project with Farrell is a generational drama about a family of police officers.
