December 30, 2004: Sister says ailing Richard Pryor attempted suicide

U.S. comedian Richard Pryor, fighting multiple sclerosis, has lost the use of his voice, his sister says.

Pryor's sister Jennifer revealed on a U.S. TV appearance that her brother, who has been battling the debilitating ailment since 1986, can no longer speak, the World Entertainment Network said Thursday.

Pryor, 64, was forced to stop acting after appearing in 1997 movie "Lost Highway."

The comedian's sister also said she thinks her brother tried to kill himself in 1981 when he was thought to have set himself on fire accidentally.

But, Jennifer said, "No, no, it was not an accident. I think Richard wanted to take his life."

December 25, 2004: Queen Elizabeth praises Britain's troops

LONDON — Queen Elizabeth praised British troops for their courage and commitment during a demanding year in a special Christmas message broadcast Saturday.

In what is believed to be the first of its kind, the Queen recorded a special message for troops stationed abroad that was played during breakfast programming on the British Forces Broadcasting Service.

The Queen told the troops -- who tuned into the broadcast from posts in Iraq, Brunei, Germany and at bases in the U.K. -- that she was proud of their efforts in what had been a demanding year.

"The varied tasks you take on in all parts of the world may be changing, but what remains the same is the spirit, good humour, courage and commitment you show every day, often in the most arduous conditions,'' the Queen said in the recorded message.

"The conflict in Iraq has dominated the headlines at home, but I am only too aware that whilst many of you have been deployed there, others have been working tirelessly in many other theatres.''

The Queen's traditional Christmas message, heard later in the day, said that religion and culture can be a source of conflict.

But she says that's ironic because every religion has something to say about tolerance and respecting others.

The Queen says some people may feel threatened by diversity and they need to be reassured that it's an asset.

She says the benefits of different people working together can been seen in business, local government, sports, music and the arts.

The Queen adds there have been great strides during her lifetime, but discrimination still exists and there is much more to be done.

The Queen, the Duke of Edinburgh and members of the royal family attended a traditional Christmas Day parade at St. Mary Magdalene's Church on her Sandringham estate Saturday.

Police arrested several protesters from a father's rights group called Fathers 4 Justice on the edge of the royal estate Saturday morning.

The group, which supports fathers in custody battles, said they had planned to climb onto St. Mary's Magdalene Church as part of an attention-grabbing protest, one of several that have been staged around Britain in recent months.

Meanwhile, millions of Britons woke to a white Christmas, with several centimetres of snow falling in Northern Ireland, Scotland, north Wales and parts of northwest England. It was the first time widespread snowfalls were recorded in Britain on Christmas Day since 2001.

December 22, 2004: Ozzy Osbourne's Stolen Gold Records Found in a Trash Can

Stolen gold and silver discs won by Ozzy Osbourne's band Black Sabbath were recovered after thieves dumped them behind trash cans.

The discs were reported missing last week after a burglary at the home of Osbourne's former manager Patrick Meehan, in Edenbridge, Kent, southeast England.

Kent Police said an anonymous tip led them to the eight discs, found Wednesday in a plastic bag dumped behind recycling bins.

Two other discs stolen in the haul - which included the albums "Master of Reality," "Paranoid" and "Black Sabbath, Vol. 4" - had already been returned after being offered for sale on Internet auction site eBay.

Osbourne, who earned fame as a heavy metal rocker in the 1970s, was a victim of burglars himself last month.

He unsuccessfully attempted to tackle thieves who broke into his Buckinghamshire mansion, west of London, and made off with valuable jewelry.

December 9, 2004: Rolling Stones Recording With Don Was

The Rolling Stones recently concluded recording sessions for a new album in Paris with producer Don Was. The band will reconvene in the New Year for additional sessions for an album tentatively due in summer 2005, Was tells Billboard.com.

Was describes the Stones' new music as considerably different from their recent releases. "Mick [Jagger] and Keith [Richards] are writing songs together in a collaborative fashion that probably hasn't been seen since the late '60s," he says. "I would say that longtime fans of the Rolling Stones will be thrilled with these results, and new fans will understand why they're the greatest rock'n'roll band in the world."

December 6, 2004: Landlord offers free rent to Rosa Parks

Civil rights icon Rosa Parks, who in 2002 faced eviction from her home, will have a free place to live for the rest of her life.

Riverfront Associates, which owns the downtown Riverfront Apartments where Parks has lived since 1994, quietly decided in early October to allow Parks to stay there rent-free permanently.

"I thought it was the right thing to do," managing partner Peter Cummings said Friday. "This woman is an icon. She deserves an enormous amount of respect. In a way, I think it's an honor to be able to accord her that respect."

Days after the previously undisclosed gift, the Free Press reported on Oct. 15 that some of Parks' relatives were worried about her finances and whether she was being properly cared for. A Nov. 23 article chronicled lawsuits against two charities associated with Parks, the repossession of a vehicle and two eviction notices the Riverfront Apartments sent her in 2002.

The Free Press obtained an Oct. 11 letter from Cummings regarding the rent-free arrangement that also disclosed that Hartford Memorial Baptist Church in Detroit had been paying Parks' rent, which had been as high as $1,800 a month.

The Rev. Charles Adams said Friday that his church discovered Parks needed financial help and began paying her rent in August 2003.

"We did not want her set out in the street," Adams said of Parks, who is not a member of Hartford. "We said we will do it for as long as is necessary. We didn't want to make a big noise out of it. ... It was a simple act of kindness."

In his letter to Adams, Cummings thanked the pastor for the church's contributions and relieved it of the monthly obligation. Parks now is responsible only for her utilities, Cummings wrote.

Her longtime caretaker and friend, Elaine Steele, said again Friday that the 91-year-old Parks is feeble but doing well. Steele, who also manages the nonprofit Rosa & Raymond Parks Institute, said Parks gets proper care and that the eviction notices were sent in error.

"We've not mismanaged anything," she said. "We have said that this is a difficult financial period. It has been for some time. It has been for some other organizations."

She said the rent-free offer is "very wonderful."

Parks is best known for refusing to give up her seat to a white man on a Montgomery, Ala., bus in 1955. Her action is credited with sparking a bus boycott that helped trigger the modern-day civil rights movement.

More recently she has been involved in a $5-billion lawsuit against record companies over the use of her name in a song by the hip-hop duo Outkast.

December 3, 2004: Teen's Parents Sue Actor Nick Nolte

LOS ANGELES — Parents of a teenage girl have sued Nick Nolte, alleging their daughter was drugged and sexually assaulted at a party at the actor's Malibu home two years ago.

The lawsuit, filed Nov. 29 in Superior Court, also lists an employee and several others as defendants. One of the defendants, Nicholas Woodring, was convicted in March of having sex with the girl, then 15 and a minor.

The girl's attorney, Philip Dunn, said Woodring was sentenced to 180 days in jail, but that the case did not go to trial.

"The criminal prosecution is over, and the victim wishes to make sure that nothing like this happens to anyone else again under the same or similar circumstances," Dunn said Thursday.

The district attorney's office could not immediately confirm a criminal conviction late Thursday.

"The incident happened nearly two years ago, when Mr. Nolte was not at the property," Nolte's publicist Arnold Robinson said Thursday. "It is our understanding that the individual responsible has been held accountable. Mr. Nolte was at the time, and still remains, concerned for the young lady's well-being."

According to the civil suit, Woodring and a minor gave the girl the date-rape drug GHB and then sexually assaulted her at a Jan. 25, 2003, party.

The suit alleges another minor and a man identified as a "resident supervisor and security officer" for Nolte helped her alleged assailants by supplying the drugs.

It claims Nolte was negligent because he was "aware of the propensity" of the security officer and one of the minors "for providing alcohol and/or drugs to minor children," and "the use of these intoxicating substances for the purpose of gaining compliance to certain acts of sexual harassment."

The girl's parents are seeking unspecified damages.

December 2, 2004: Hometown plans Don Knotts Festival

Don Knotts is getting his own festival.

Officials in his hometown of Morgantown, W.Va., plan a Don Knotts Festival during Arts Celebration Week in August.

The festival will include showings of some of Knotts' film and television work. The 80-year-old is mainly identified with the role that won him five Emmys, that of bumbling deputy Barney Fife on "The Andy Griffith Show."

Mayor Ron Justice said the city plans to invite Knotts.

"We have had people call us and travel from all over the United States just to see his birthplace," said Stacey Brodak of the local visitors bureau.
